St Mawes Sailing Club hosted an Open Training and Racing weekend for RS Feva’s on 16th-17th April. 14 boats turned out for the training on the Saturday and coaches Bob Warren and Duncan Bryan from Roseland paddle and Sail took them through some land drills whilst waiting for the breeze to fill in. The boats went afloat in St Mawes bay in almost flat calm conditions – seeking out each tiny zephyr of wind whilst working on their boat handling skills. After lunch they headed up the River towards Percuil in the hope that the light wind might stay in the river. Practice starts and a few short race before the fleet had to be towed home as the wind died completely.
The competitors and their families enjoyed the hospitality of the newly refurbished clubhouse on Saturday night. Sunday morning dawned beautifully sunny with a building breeze from the east giving perfect conditions for the 5 race series. After lunch the first race was an M course giving the fleet more challenging tighter reaches with their asymmetrics, and for the final race, Race Officer Bob Warren sent them up the river for a long distance race with a turning mark up Froe Creek and a finish line set in the river, off the club’s Quay. This made for spectacular viewing and cheers of excitement from supporters on the Quay, as the final race headed for a tie break between the Sylvester brothers and the Wilkinson/Croft duo. The now traditional ‘tea on the Quay’ welcomed the young crews in, followed by prize giving.
Racing was close throughout the series with the final results:

In June Team Feva travelled to Penzance with 4 boats for the Second of the traveller series. The first race was memorable because Scarlett Croft, crewing for Rachel Thomas, beat her older brother Josh, crewing for Elliott Wilkinson! The boys soon turned the tables in the second race. After lunch a 180 degree wind shift caused some issues for the Race Officer, and by the time the wind had settled in the North and the course re-laid it was only possible to get in one final race. The results for St Mawes were:

Our Feva sailors travelled to Helford River Sailing Club on Sunday 10th July for the 3rd of the RYA's Traveller series for Cornwall.
With the start scheduled for 10.00 it was an early start from Stonework’s, with the children going on ahead by fast Rib’s to attend the briefing and complete registration (plus bacon sandwiches courtesy of HRSC), and their boats following on a slow tow behind St Mawes’ sailing club Rib. We all met up again at the entrance to the Helford, just as the Committee boat dropped anchor and sounded the warning signal.
The morning was overcast with the breeze picking up under the clouds from the W/SW. 3 races were sailed before lunch with Tom Sylvester and Josh Croft scoring 1, 2, 1. Rachel Thomas and Scarlett Croft weren’t so lucky having jammed spinnaker halyard in the first race. They recovered well for the 2 afternoon races winning the final race. Sam White and Robbie Holbrook had some mixed results and were frustrated when they sailed into a hole on the finish line in the 3rd race, to go from 3rd to 5th inches from the line.
An excellent cream tea was held in the Club after racing.

Falmouth Week saw 15 Feva’s entered, of which 10 were from St Mawes. This included some of our less experienced Feva sailors, and looking at the windy forecast on the Saturday I was a bit concerned at how they would fare! The Sunday and Monday were really windy, with big squalls gusting to 30 knots. Particular mention should go to the Stratton brothers who had only just started to race Feva’s who showed real determination in the challenging conditions, and also to Hugo Matthews who hadn’t sailed a Feva before, and came 4th overall. We kept our Feva’s at Restonguet for the week and this really helped our sailors to get into the dinghy park atmosphere at RSC, which they have missed out on basing themselves in St Mawes.

Team Feva were at Stithians Lake the weekend of 3rd/4th September for some race coaching on Saturday and the final Traveller series on Sunday. It was breezy on Saturday and even more son on Sunday, with some St Mawes sailors opting for their smaller training sails in an effort to stay upright!
Two races were sailed before lunch in an increasing breeze that kept the safety boats fully occupied. Particularly impressive was lightweights Rachel Thomas and Scarlett Croft steaming along to 2nd place with a training sail. Wise decision girls! The 3rd race had to be abandoned shortly after the start after a big squall decimated the fleet with the majority capsized or turtled.

Team Feva continued sailing in the Autumn with a combination of race training (at home and at Stithians) and Club Racing in St Mawes on Sundays until the end of October, then at Restronguet once racing had finished in St Mawes. In September and October the wind seemed to be up every weekend and we sailed in some challenging conditions. We finished as we started on the 1st weekend of December with an Open Race training session coached by Bob Warren. 7 boats attended, which was fantastic for the time of year.
Well done to Elliott Wilkinson who qualified for the RYA Intermediate Squad sailing with Jonny Innes, and for the SW squad sailing with Charlie Pursall, and we look forward to benefiting from their winter training when they return in the Spring!

RS FEVA NATIONALS
SOUTH CAERNARVONSHIRE YACHT CLUB, ABERSOCH
St Mawes Sailing Club entered 3 boats in the RS Feva Nationals held at SCYC, Abersoch. Unfortunately, with only a week to go, Flora Jobson badly damaged her knee, so only 2 boats took part. The event took place over 4 days on the May Bank holiday weekend. Abersoch is at the tip of the Lleyn peninsular in North Wales, spectacularly overshadowed by the Snowdon and Cambrian range of mountains.
Being keen, Team Feva were the 1st boats to arrive on Friday lunchtime, in time to rig the boats and go for a sail after a 9 hour drive. By Saturday lunchtime the landscape had changed a bit with 105 Feva’s parked on the beach. The practice races on the Saturday afternoon gave us a taste of what was to come, with a course set by the Race Officer well out to sea in windy conditions. Our sailors looked a bit on the small and light side for the conditions but were not intimidated (much) by the size of the other sailors or the sight of 105 other Feva’s starting at the same time.
Our team was old hands Elliott Wilkinson and Josh Croft, and newcomers Tom Morris and Scarlett Croft.
On Sunday the fleet was divided into 2 flights for a 3 race series that would decide how the fleet split into Gold and Silver fleets. The start was delayed by 4 hours for the wind to reduce a bit. It was still windy, and the course set even further out to sea than the previous day, so the Feva’s were just specks on the horizon from the club. Scarlett and Tom completed the 1st race but were struggling to stay upright and retired from the 2nd race exhausted. The boys completed all 3 races, returning to shore at 7pm, (an hour after the competitors beach BBQ had started!), but were delighted to qualify for the Gold fleet.
Monday and Tuesday saw the winds moderate a bit, and with 3 races back to back stamina was the name of the game, with our young sailors leaving the beach at 10am and not returning until after 4pm. We quickly realised that the usual cereal bars and lucozade were not going to be enough to keep them going between races. Most of the teams seemed to have large support Rib’s, but we just had a small yacht tender – hardly suitable for the conditions, but it was pressed into service to deliver sandwiches to the crews between races.
The final results were Elliott and Josh 42nd in the gold fleet, and Scarlett and Tom 40th in the Silver fleet.
It was a huge learning curve for them sailing in such large fleet, and being on the water so long, but a great experience and fantastic location. The Nationals this year are closer to home in Torbay (2nd – 5th June), and I would encourage any of the Feva sailors to have a go. The Worlds are also in the UK this year at Hayling Island (July 21st – 27th).
