RS Feva Open Training and Racing Weekend at St Mawes

13th – 14th April 2013

13 boats and 26 youngsters from across Cornwall came together for a windy weekend of open training and Racing in RS Feva dinghies hosted by Roseland Paddle and Sail and St Mawes Sailing Club.

Visitors came from Rock and Porthpean. More were expected from Penzance SC and Fowey Gallants but the poor forecast caused them to cancel.

On Saturday the fleet was divided into 2 – the more experienced ones out in the bay in St Mawes coached by Bob Warren, and the less experienced up the river in more sheltered waters at Percuil, coached by Marianne Bryant. Various race training exercises were undertaken, and the sailors returned to shore wet but exhilarated! The strong winds took their toll with only 8 boats returning for the afternoon session, quickly reduced to 6 after 2 failed to get off the beach. The crews worked on their heavy weather upwind skills and downwind blasting!

Sunday dawned even windier, and the briefing was postponed to 10.30 in the expectation of the weather moderating, which it did. Race Officer Bob Warren sensibly decided to sail the 5 races in the more sheltered conditions in the river. With the windy conditions results were quite erratic, with gear failure, man overboard, multiple capsizes and groundings in the shallow water after lunch taking their toll on the fleet. The traditional ‘Tea on the Quay’ was much appreciated, especially as the sun finally came out.

Final results;

First:
Ross Warren (Roseland Waveriders)
Oliver Holmes (St Mawes SC)

Second:
James Dowrick (Porthpean)
Luke Bilkey (Porthpean)

Third:
Rachel Thomas (St Mawes SC)
Olivia Leather (St Mawes SC)

Volvo Champion Club Award

In the last week of June 2012 Sarah Ayton, double Olympic Gold medallist presented St Mawes Sailing Club Team Feva with its Volvo Champion Club award at our local Volvo dealer in Truro. The award was received by lead coach Tom Bray and 2 of the original team members Kerry Holbrook and Elliot Wilkinson.

Before the presentation Sarah talked about her career in sailing and her Olympic success winning Gold in Athens as crew to Shirley Robertson in the Yngling, and then winning Gold again in Beijing as helm in the Yngling. After the presentation the Team had the chance to talk to Sarah, and to hold her Gold medal!
