May Day Cup Races

John Townsend Memorial Salver for Ajaxs
A silver salver purchased by the SW Ajax Class Association in memory of Lt Cdr John Townshend, who died after winning the 1992 May Day Race in Achilles. The trophy remains in the control of the Association and is awarded to the winning Ajax in the St Mawes SC May Day Cup Races.

The Treasure Hunt Challenge Cup for St Mawes ODs

The Ajax Shield for Marieholms
Presented in 1977 to be competed for by the Falmouth area Ajax Fleets. As all Ajax class yachts became based at St Mawes by 1992, it was re-allocated to the winner of the annual team race between the Ajax and St Mawes OD teams. After 1994 this competition ceased and in 2000 the trophy was presented to the winner of the Marieholm Class in the May Day Cup races.

The Sixteen Bells Trophy for Handicap Yachts
Presented by Howard Lees in 1992 to be awarded annually to the winner of the New Years Day Race. Sixteen Bells are struck only once a year, at midnight on 31st December / 1st January, the privilege of so doing falling upon the youngest member of the Ship’s Company. This charity race ceased after 1995 and in 2000 the trophy was awarded to the winner of the Handicap Yachts in the May Day Cup Races.

The Keppel Bay Trophy for Handicap Dinghies
The 40th anniversary medal commemorating the foundation of the Keppel Bay SC of Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia mounted on a teak sculpture, recognises the annual competition for the St Mawes Trophy presented by St Mawes SC in 1958 to create a link between the clubs. In the year 2000 this trophy was awarded to the winning Handicap Dinghy in the May Day Cup Races.

The Clive Cup for Shrimpers
Presented in 1981 by the late Sqn Ldr D Clive AFC, for award annually to the winning competitor in the race for Board Sailors under 18. Owing to the lack of interest locally in sailboard racing, it was decided in 1985, with the approval of Sqn Ldr Clive, to award this cup at the end of the season to the Handicap Class Yacht (Div 2) gaining the highest number of actual points to possible points in the Percentage Competition. There were no competitors for this competition after 1993 and in 2000 the trophy was offered to the winning Shrimper in the May Day Cup races.

Frank Peters Challenge Cups

The Canon Chapple Trophy for the winning Sunbeam
Presented in 1982 by the late Rev Canon A Chapple for annual competition by the Falmouth Division of the Sunbeam OD Class. It is currently awarded to the winning Sunbeam in the Frank Peters Challenge Cup Series.

Vage Challenge Cup for the winning Marieholm International
Presented by Mr WA Vage to be awarded to the winning Falmouth 18’ OD Class in the Frank Peters Competition. In 1992, after two years during which there were no entries in this class, the cup was transferred, with Mr Vage's consent, to be awarded to the winning Ajax in the May Day Cup Races. Since 1994 the trophy has been awarded to the winning Topper. In 1996 it was awarded to the winning Marieholm in the Frank Peters Competition.

The Harmony Cup for St Mawes ODs
Presented in 1950 by the late Major AB Mathews, DSO, OBE, MC, to be awarded at the end of the season to the St Mawes One Design gaining the highest number of points in the Aggregate Competition. In 2000 this competition was changed to the Thursday Series.

The Kellie Ledward Cup for Ajaxs
Presented in 1937 by the late Mrs Kellie and the late Mrs J Ledward to be awarded to the boat acquiring the highest number of points from the beginning of the season to the 1st August, excepting the Sunbeam Class. In 1939 it was used as a challenge cup for the Annual Ladies’ Race. The Ladies’ Race was abandoned in 1955 and the cup lay dormant until 1981 when it was awarded to Vesper, the winning St Mawes One Design in the Percentage Competition. Allocated to the Ajax Class in 1982, it was awarded at the end of the season to the Ajax gaining the highest number of points in the Aggregate Competition. In 2000 this competition was changed to the Thursday Series.

Sunday Points Series

The Money Bowl for St Mawes ODs
Presented in 1946 by the late General and Mrs RC Money in memory of their son, 2nd Lt RC Money, 2nd Bn. The Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), killed in action in Belgium on 27th May 1940, for award to the winner of the Menagerie Class Race. Allocated to the St Mawes OD Class, it remained with the Class until 1978 when it became the Ajax Class Aggregate Cup. With the re-emergence of the St Mawes ODs as a separate class in 1982, it was re-allocated to that class for award at the end of the season to the St Mawes OD gaining the highest percentage of actual points to possible points in the Percentage Competition. In 2000 this competition was changed to the Sunday Series. In 2003 this competition was changed to the Red Stripe Series.

The Marecco Cup for Ajaxs
Presented in 1962 by the late GF Marecco for award annually to the Enterprise dinghy acquiring the highest number of points during the season. It became dormant when the Enterprise Class faded out in 1969 and in 1974 it was allocated to the Ajax Class to be awarded at the end of the season to the Ajax gaining the highest percentage of actual points to possible points in the Percentage Competition. In 2000 this competition was changed to the Sunday Series. In 2003 this competition was changed to the Monday Series.

The Pollywog Cup for Handicap Yachts
Presented in 1950 by the late Mrs WNC Van Grutten for award to the Handicap Yacht gaining the highest number of points during the season, and so named because it was originally won by Mrs Van Grutten’s father in a yacht called Pollywog. It is now awarded at the end of the season to the Handicap Class Yacht gaining the highest number of actual points to possible points in the Percentage Competition. In 2000 this competition was changed to the Sunday Series. In 2003 this competition was changed to the Monday Series.

Crew Races

The Eroica Cup for Handicap Yachts
Originally the St Mawes SC Ajax team Race Challenge Cup, the only recorded winner being Flushing SC in 1976, this cup was refurbished in 1985 by Mr AW Sidebottom and was then awarded annually to the winning competitor in the Ladies Race for boats over 16’. In 1992 the dinghies and dayboats over 16’ were given a separate race and this cup was awarded to the winning Handicap Yacht in the Ladies Regatta. In the following year this regatta was replaced by a crew race and the cup stayed with the Cruiser Class.

The 1939 Silver Cup for Ajaxs
Presented in 1939 by St Mawes SC, its history is unknown. In 1992 it was presented to the winning Ajax in the Ladies Regatta which became the Crew Race in 1993.

The Commodore's Cup for St Mawes ODs
Presented in 1986 by past Commodores, or their wives, for award annually to the winning helmsman and crew in a race for St Mawes ODs with helmsman under 18 and crew of any age. After several years in which it was not awarded the cup was presented in 1993 to the winning helmsman of a St Mawes OD in the Crew’s Race.

Junior Regatta

The Brenda Pye Cup for Handicap Dinghies
Presented in 1983 by Miss Brenda Pye for award annually to the winning competitor in the race for dinghies of 18’ and under with helm under 18 years. It is currently awarded to the winning competitor at the Junior Regatta in the race for Handicap Dinghies.

The Whitton Cup for Picos
Presented in 1953 by the late Mr J Whitton to encourage young helms and to be raced for annually by the St Mawes OD Class with helm and crew of age under 21 on their previous birthdays, to be open to all Port of Falmouth neighbouring clubs. In 1963 the age limit was reduced to 16 and under. In 1974, with the approval of Mr Whitton, it was decided that the Whitton Cup race should be restricted to Mirror Dinghies with helms and crew of age under 18. It is currently sailed for the Pico race at the Junior Regatta.

The Florence Perpetual Challenge Cups for Working Boats
Two cups presented in 1978 by the St Mawes crew of the Florence (1964-72) for award annually to the winning Working Sailing Boats in the over 25’ and under 25’ classes in the St Mawes SC Falmouth Week Regatta.

The Stephen Cup for St Mawes ODs
Presented in 1993 by Stanley Green in memory of his father, Frank Green, who originally won the cup outright in Nesta in 1924. Frank Green was one of the founder members of the Club and Nesta was one of a class of Estuary dinghies which was successful until Frank Peters designed and built the first St Mawes One Design. Now presented to the St Mawes One Design winner of the Mylor Yacht Club Regatta in Falmouth Week.

The Barton Cup for St Mawes ODs

The Marieholm Half Model for Marieholm Internationals
The ‘Marieholm Half Model’ was donated by Christopher Hoare and presented to the Club in September 1995 on behalf of the Marieholm Class. It is to be presented each year and inscribed with the boat’s name and the owner’s name for the best performance in Falmouth Week.

This Pewter Claret Jug was presented to the Club in 2000 by Tony Price, then Cruiser Captain, to be awarded to the winner of the first Cruiser Pursuit race of the season in each year of the new millennium.

The Bryn Jones Memorial Trophy for May Series (Mid Week) Pursuit Races
Presented in 1985 by the National Giro Bank in memory of their colleague, Mr BM Jones, for award annually to the boat gaining the highest number of points in the National Giro Bank sponsored Pursuit Race. In 1990 it was transferred to the winner of the Pursuit Race Series and in 1993 to the winner of the Mid-Week Pursuit Race Series. In 2003 it was transferred to the May Pursuit Series.

The Williams Cup for October Series (Weekend) Pursuit Races
Presented in 1994 in his memory by the family of the late John IC Williams who sailed and raced his cruiser Zett out of St Mawes. The cup is awarded annually to the winner of the Sunday Pursuit Race Series. In 2003 it was transferred to the October Pursuit Series.

The Bomar Trophy
Dougie Burnett sailing for the Club in a Miniature 12 Metre Yacht in a Little America’s Cup series in Falmouth in 1984 won this model of a winged keel. In 1993 he offered the trophy to the Club for the winner of the Match Racing Series. By 2000 no match races had been sailed and the trophy was transferred to the Occasional Sunday Series.

The Desmond Sinnott Memorial Cup for Racing Progress
Presented in 1992 by the St Mawes One Design Association in memory of Des Sinnott of the Roseland Inn for the best performance of a Junior in a Topper in the Aggregate Points Series. From 1999 it was awarded to the Junior Trainee who had made the most progress in racing.

The Young Sailor of the Year Award for Picos
Presented in 1986 by Jon Morgan for award annually to the young (under 18) sailor judged by the Sailing Committee to have achieved the most promising performance during the year, either as helm or crew. From 1999 this was awarded to the Junior Trainee who had made most progress in a Pico.

The Penrose Trophy
Presented in 1963 by the late Dr NC Penrose OBE, in memory of his father, James E Penrose, who taught him to sail, and of 50 years ownership of the sloop Kanoogie, to be awarded at the end of the season by the Commodore for the best performance or achievement during the year either in racing, cruising or other Club activity.

The Nefertiti Cup for Cruising
Donated in 1993 by Mrs Susie Hancock whose husband, the late Bramley Hancock, fitted out Nefertiti, a Bowman 46 yawl, and moored her in the Percuil River for some years. In 1974 she won this cup, the Italian Ambassador’s Cup, for the ‘most sporting gesture’ in the Middle Sea Race round Sicily from Malta whilst en route to Greece. It is awarded to the cruiser skipper deemed by the fleet captain to have undertaken the most adventurous cruise in the previous year.

The Norman Smith Falmouth Week Challenge Trophy for special merit
Presented in 1987 by Mrs Jessie K Smith in memory of her husband, Mr Norman Smith, for award at the end of each season to the helmsman of the Handicap Yacht judged by the Sailing Committee to have contributed the most to club racing during the year and to Falmouth Week in particular. The trophy depicts the Black Rock Beacon with a cage top mark as it used to be; the cage provided minimal shelter for a survivor awaiting rescue!

Presented in 1984 by Mrs T Overbury for award annually to the winning competitor in the Ladies’ Race for St Mawes ODs. This cup was originally won by Mrs Overbury’s uncle for his marksmanship.
