Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the course held?

All courses are held at St Mawes Sailing Club Quay off Tredenham Road (not the town quay or the club house), TR2 5AW. As you approach St Mawes on the A3078, pass the Fire Station on the left, travel a further 0.75km, as the road bears right there is a lane on the left with a small yellow sign. There is no parking at the quay, for safety please do not park on yellow lines at the top of the lane. There is a large car park in St Mawes and limited street parking.

What should I wear?

We strongly recommend a wetsuit, waterproof top, hat, sun-cream and footwear (wetsuit boots, sandals or old trainers). We provide buoyancy aids but if you have your own you are welcome to use it. Wetsuits are available to hire from Bob Warren at Roseland Paddle & Sail (07970 926409). Sailors who aren't properly dressed won't be allowed on the water.

What should I bring with me?

In a bag, you may wish to bring a bottle of water and a small snack, a towel and change of clothes (there is a very small changing area and shower), please bring your RYA log book if you have one. If you are attending a full day course bring a packed lunch.

Will I get an RYA certificate?

If you have completed all the necessary syllabus points listed in the logbook and your instructor judges you competent enough for that certificate, you will be presented with the relevant RYA certificate. Attending a course is no guarantee of certification as your progress will depend on how well you have kept up your skills and how hard you work during your course. Adverse weather conditions may prevent enough practical sessions being run to cover all syllabus points.

Who teaches the courses?

A team of RYA Dinghy Instructors supervised by a RYA Senior Instructor and helped by Assistant Instructors. All instructors are trained in first-aid, rescue boat handling and teaching techniques to RYA standards. The centre Principal is Bob Hindmarsh.
