Junior Sail Training

The Sailing Club's Junior Sail Training section runs courses each year for sailors between the ages of 8 and 16 using our fleet of sailing dinghies. Our junior sailors enjoy success at local, National and International level, and participate in village regattas, the Cornwall Schools Regatta, Falmouth Dinghy Week and our own Junior Race Week.

RYA Training Centre Status

Our recognition as a RYA Training Centre means we're inspected annually to ensure that we maintain high standards of tuition, equipment and safety. Sailors are taught by qualified RYA Dinghy Instructors to the standards required by the RYA Youth Sailing Scheme. The Centre provides courses to achieve the following levels of competence:

  • RYA Stage 1 - A basic understanding of how a boat sails, with some experience of steering and handling the boat.
  • RYA Stage 2 - A range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor.
  • RYA Stage 3 - Rigging, launching and sailing in any direction. Equivalent to Level 2 in the National Sailing Scheme
  • RYA Stage 4 - Sailing a double handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat.

See details of the courses provided by the Centre on the Sail Training page.

Our Equipment

JST courses use the club's fleet of Hartley 10s, Laser Picos, RS Tera, and Hartley 12.2 dinghies for younger sailors and RS Fevas and standard Lasers for more advanced training. A Wayfarer is also used for children when the wind is too strong for the smaller boats (it is also used for adult sail training). The club's fleet of five powerboats is used to provide safety cover. The JST training room on the quay houses equipment for shore-based teaching.

Team FEVA

The Club's RS Fevas are used to introduce more advanced training for our sailors who have completed their RYA Level 4 in the 11-16 age group. The Team are trained by various RYA Race Coaches, host Open Meetings (organised by Roseland Paddle and Sail), and attend various regattas, including the RYA 'Feva Frenzy' at Stithians Lake.

JST Laser Squad

The Club encourages those who have reached RYA Level 4 but prefer single handed sailing to sail Lasers. The Squad is coached by RYA Race Coaches

RYA Champion Club

The Club was awarded RYA Champion Club status in June 2012. Double Olympic Gold medallist Sarah Ayton presented the award in recognition of our Juniior Race training.

Safeguarding and Child Protection

The club has a current Child Protection policy conforming to the RYA recommendations. The full document can be viewed by clicking here.
