The information on this page does not replace a RYA approved course run by qualified instructors and it is important to stress that we see it as essential that people going out on the water should seek proper instruction before sailing on their own.

Below are some things to remember before going afloat:

  • Weather Forecast
  • Tide Prediction
  • Buoyancy Aid or Lifejacket
  • Method of Communication
  • Safety Equipment (e.g. bailer, paddle, whistle etc)
  • Tell a responsible adult the following:
    1. Where you are going
    2. When you will be back
    3. Number of people onboard
    4. Description of boat
  • Aim to return well before dusk/sunset.

Things to remember if you get into difficulty:

  • Stay with the boat and attract attention
  • Contact the Coastguard on 999 or VHF Channel 16

If you see someone else in difficulty:

  • Contact the Coastguard on 999 or VHF Channel 16
  • Remember that attempting a rescue is likely to put you in danger
