Debbie Purser, St Mawes-based owner and skipper of pilot cutter Tallulah, gave us a fascinating insiders view of what it is like to sail (and maintain) one of these beautiful boats and why they have grown in popularity in recent times.

Debbie and Adam founded the annual Pilot Cutter Review in 2008 (also known as the World Championships). This year the events will take place in the first week of June.  Meeting in Fowey, Charlestown and St Mawes the fleet will provide some spectacular photo opportunities, especially while racing in the Carrick Roads and Falmouth Bay.

Rupert Kirkwood the Lone Kayaker gave an entertaining and beautifully illustrated talk on his encounters with wildlife while kayaking around the coast of Devon and Cornwall.  He showed us his photograph the fluke of a humpback whale that had not previously been identified.  He was invited to name it and chose the name Cream Tea as he had first seen it off Penzance and wanted a name with a Cornish connection.  The whale was subsequently named Pi (due to the very distinctive π mark on the right side of the fluke) and there have been many sightings of Cream Tea/Pi off Scilly this winter.  Less than a week after Ruperts talk 3 humpback whales were spotted between Pendennis Point and St Anthony. There was also a fin whale spotted in Falmouth Harbour about a month ago.  Wildlife kayaking anybody?

Film nights have been popular with the latest one sold out. They will usually take place on the last Monday of the month.  There is no charge, but you need to book seats.  If you find that you are not able to use a seat that you have booked please let Janice Young know so that she can tell anyone who has not been able to book due to limited numbers:  janicey7@googlemail.com
