St Mawes Sailing Club

June 2024 Newsletter

It is good to see increasing numbers of boats out on the water, and we hope to see many more of you taking part in Club and other sailing events. The full racing calendar is on the Club website together with the Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions.

In June we look forward to a gathering of pilot cutters for the Pilot Cutter Review which starts on the 30th May in Fowey with racing in our local waters on the 1st and 2nd June.  Then from 2nd to 6th June we will be treated once again to the beautiful spectacle of a fleet of classic and modern superyachts in Falmouth Bay and Carrick Roads for the Richard Mille Cup.

On the social side, a fundraising event for the RNLI is being organised by Club members Debbie Brown and Juilette Leach.  Its on Wednesday 29th May starting at 1030 hrs.  Bring your friends along to enjoy the view, a hot drink and lovely home-made cakes.  RNLI merchandise will be available and a raffle with very generous prizes from local businesses.

A fun quiz night was recently organised by JA to raise funds for the newly refurbished Recreation Ground building.  Thanks to everyone's support we were able to donate over £500.

There are a number of events being organised in and around the Roseland and Falmouth in early June to mark the 80th anniversary of the D Day landings. American troops embarked at Turnaware for the crossing to Omaha where thousands were killed and injured. See below for links to more information.

To book one of these sailing taster sessions click on this link (if you are not a Club member you will need to create an account). There is no charge and buoyancy aids will be provided. This is a great opportunity if you have ever fancied trying out sailing but have not known how to get involved. 80th D-Day Anniversary Commemorative Flotilla Thursday June 6th, 2024

Falmouth Town Council, Falmouth BID, Falmouth Harbour Commissioners and the Port of Truro are organising a flotilla to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

Our ports want to recognise the largest seaborne invasion in history and to honour the service and sacrifice of the Allied Forces, many of whom were stationed in and around Falmouth during the Second World War.

The flotilla of what is hoped to be over 80 boats, will muster at 14.30 at Tolverne pool, north of the King Harry Ferry and make their way down the River Fal at 15.00, passing some of the locations where servicemen embarked before crossing The Channel.

The aim is to motor down the main channel of Carrick Roads and to finish off Gyllyngvase Beach (weather permitting) before dispersal.  Anyone wishing to take part MUST upload a copy of their boat insurance document. You will NOT be able to partake if you have not registered. All vessels must be under engine power.

It would be lovely if participating boats could dress overall. You will need to sign in or create a Google account to register.  https://forms.gle/DYg6EHVBoT23... For any queries and further information please contact Hayley Nicholson at Falmouth Town Council. hayley@falmouth.co.uk
