St Mawes Sailing Club
September 2024 newsletter

August ended with a very enthusiastic, if rather blustery, flourish.  It was wonderful to see so many young sailors out in the harbour enjoying Junior Race Week. Many thanks to all those involved in organising and supporting the week's racing.  A number of local boats took part in Portscatho Regatta although fewer than in previous years due to the strong winds that were forecast.  Working boats largely chose to race without their topsails which made it harder for those watching from the shore to distinguish one boat from another.  Percuil Regatta was very well attended with competitors contending with gusty winds in the river. See Mark Osborn's report on the website [link here]

Falmouth Sailing Week is the highlight of our local sailing calendar, with races organised by Port of Falmouth Sailing Association and post-race teas hosted by local sailing clubs in turn.  It was St Mawes Sailing Club's turn to host on the Friday, and an army of volunteers prepared and served teas to over 170 sailors, supporters and organisers.  Well done to Emma Andrew for organising such an impressive spread and thanks to all who helped on the day.

Jane Wright, Vice Chair of PoFSA wrote: Please can you forward our thanks to all the volunteer teams who work tirelessly to make this day run so smoothly. The post regatta teas were, as usual, exceptional, gratefully received by FSW volunteers and competitors alike. The arrangements for getting competitors ashore were very well received. You all made the week a great success.

See link below to an article about Falmouth Sailing Week in Yachts and Yachting magazine: www.yachtsandyachting.com/news...

Our thanks to St Mawes Pier and Harbour Company for allowing competitors to use the visitors moorings and for help with getting crews to and from their boats. Their support for this event is always much appreciated.

From the General Committee: The minutes of the Clubs AGM held on 9th August are now on the members area of the Club website. Click Here

At the AGM, Glenn Torpy stood down as Rear Commodore (Sailing) and Ian Reid was elected to that post.  We are extremely grateful for the time and hard work that Glenn has put into his role as Rear Commodore.  Not only has he enthusiastically supported the sailing programme, he has also overseen and supported the introduction of Sailing Club Manager software to support the Clubs administrative processes and website.  We are very grateful to Ian Reid for  agreeing to take on this role.

Nick Leach was elected to the role of Quay Secretary having been co-opted last year.

We are also very grateful to those who have agreed to continue in their existing roles: Commodore John Andrew; Vice Commodore - Ian Matthews; Treasurer Nigel Hare-Scott; Rear Commodore (House) - John Lewin; Secretary Jonathan Adlington; Social Secretary Diana Lockwood; Junior Sail Training Roger Boyle; Out of Port Member Mike Hutton
