St Mawes Sailing Club November 2024 newsletter
From the General Committee:
REMINDER - Year Book Entries: Please log on to your Sailing Club Account and check your contact details and boat entries are up to date. This information will be used to populate the 2025 year book.
OVERDUE 2024/5 Membership Fees: All historic Direct Debits to the Club were cancelled in April 2024.
For those of you who are receiving reminders - please kindly settle your membership fees for 2024/5 season via Bank Transfer (the bank details are on the invoice).
Alternatively, to set up a new Direct Debit, log in to your Club account and register for GoCardless payments.
Should you have any questions or would like some assistance setting GoCardless up on your account please do not hesitate to contact the Administrator, Jane Pearce office@stmawessailing.co.uk. Jane is available weekday mornings.
Sailing Club Office opening hours: Jane, the Club Administrator, will be working from home from Wednesday 30th October to Thursday 5th December. The Club will not be open in the mornings during this time. You can still contact Jane on the usual number and by email.
Piers Eley: We are sorry to let you know of the recent death of Life Member, Piers Eley who was a member of the Club for 53 years.

Work is already underway on the 2025 club yearbook. Editor Andrew Laming would love to hear from members with any interesting news or sailing travels or racing stories they would like to submit, and any pictures you may have.
Please send words and pictures to the following email address, or contact Andrew who can have a chat to put a story together for you if you prefer. The sooner the better please, send your emails to: andrewlaming1@gmail.com
Dont delay, your contribution will help make the yearbook relevant and interesting for other club members.
Discount for Club members on sail cleaning: Will Marchant of SW Sail is offering an introductory offer of 20% discount on sail cleaning to Club members and a free sail inspection with any cleaning service. Sails can be dropped off and collected from the Clubhouse or Stoneworks by arrangement. Please contact Will at swsailcornwall@gmail.com or 07415972070 for further information.
Sail valeting and repairs are also offered by the following local firms: Penrose Sailmakers, Collins Sailmakers, and SKB Sails
November Social Events:
Please note that the date of Nigels Nautical Quiz has been changed to 12th December
Thursday 7th November: supper from 1830 hrs, steak and ale pie served with chips and peas. Book in advance on 07485 938841. Talk begins at 2000 hrs: Elliot Holman, one of our local RNLI volunteers, will talk about the highlights of his transatlantic row as part of the 22-23 Talisker Whisky Challenge. Elliot will 'Take a look into what it takes to cross 3000 miles of Atlantic ocean in a rowing boat. What does it take to get to the start line, boat and crew prep, tackling big seas, emotional highs and lows, wildlife and the scorching hot sun.'
There will be a collection for the RNLI after the talk please bring cash!
Sunday 10th November: Remembrance Sunday curry lunch served at 1300 hrs. Slow cooked beef curry served with basmati rice, naan and a poppadom Please book in advance by WhatsApp on 07485 938841
Monday 25th November: film night at the Hidden Cinema. Starts at 1900 hrs. The Holdovers (2023) starring Paul Giamatti. Run time 2h 13m. Yes, this is an American comedy. If you didnt like Sideways (also directed by Alexander Payne) this may not be for you. None the less, it has received good reviews and its on my want to watch list!
Set in 1970, a curmudgeonly instructor at a New England school remains on campus during the Christmas break. He forms an unlikely bond with a brainy but damaged troublemaker and with the school cook who has just lost her son in the Vietnam War.

December dates for your diary:
Thursday 5th December: Mike and Di Garside and Andy Cox will talk about their voyage to Iceland: Magellan Delta - My Bridge too Far? The story of the long-range high-seas powerboat Mike designed and had built for Arctic adventuring plans and how close it came to being his nemesis.
Thursday 12th December: Nigels Nautical Quiz. Supper from 1830 hrs. Quiz starts at 2000 hrs. As always, a fun evening. Its not about winning but there will be a bottle of rum for the winning team, a consolation prize for the lowest scoring team and other random prizes during the evening. £5 entry per team.
Saturday 14th December: Lifeboat Run Ashore: join us in the clubhouse from 1030 hrs to welcome the Falmouth Lifeboat volunteers and thank them for the work that they do.
Monday 30th December: 1900hrs for 2000. Festive dinner in the Courtyard Room of the St Mawes Hotel. Always a popular event. Further details to follow and bookings in advance will be made via the Club website from early December.
